Christmas Day

You can probably imagine how surprised Mrs G and I were to wake up in our time on Christmas Day, and even more surprised to be able to have a shower before the kids woke. In the end we had to wake them up - but it didn't take a lot of effort.

LGR was pretty impressed with Santa's efforts. Hayzey didn't care too much - she had found a pre-assembled toy kitched and toy tool bench and was more than happy to play with these.

The present opening started off smoothly but soon the number of presents opened was greater than the number of presents left and the kids wanted to play vs open. So we stopped for some breakfast and then decided to jump in the car and head on up to Nanna's place.

The trip was uneventful and we arrived at about 11:00. Aunt LJ and the cousins were already there, and soon after we arrived the Lithgow contingent and my Nanna arrived. It was straight into some beers, nibbles and a bit of soccer and then time for more presents.

This present opening, as always, was very noisy and very chaotic. Hayzey loved it but LGR had his hands over his ears as often as not and was not impressed with the volume.

Soon enough presents turned into lunch and we all sat down to the traditional Christmas meats and a couple of salads. From there nothing much more happened - just a bunch of talking and eating and general relaxing.

---

About midafternoon it was time to depart and head over to Grandma's. We had to detour via Uncle G's work (he's a chef in a very decent restaurant with some fantastic valley views). In short time we'd paid our respects and were at Grandma's. Mrs G started to develop a fantastic case of hayfever and was intermittently amused and frustrated by it.

Uncle G arrived home pretty soon after we all got there and the present opening began again. It was a little less chaotic than earlier in the day and I think LGR appreciated being the centre of attention. As occurred earlier in the day both kids became more interested in playing with their gifts and a break was taken to allow us to have dinner.

As expected the kiddies started to get tired about 18:00 so they were bathed, dessert had and more presents opened.

In the end we didn't leave until about 20:00 or so and managed to detour via a house in Leura which has the most fantastic light display. Hayzey was asleep by this point but LGR was still (just) awake so I got him out of the car to have a good look. He declared the lights to the 'best ever'.

It was on this moment of joy that he was bundled back into the car and we returned home for some very deep sleep.

Christmas Eve

The Jones Clan managed a pretty busy Christmas. It probably started for us on Christmas Eve, when the Huffy family came around for lunch. It was nice to catch and see the kids playing in the fairly large portable plastic pool we (ie Mrs G) had just inflated. To top it off I BBQ'd up some octopus and prawns which were fantastic.

That evening we went for a walk around our local area with LGR and Hayzey. The primary reason was to get them to go to sleep; but a secondary excuse was to go out and see the Christmas lights. Hayzey went to sleep very quickly but LGR was much too excited by the lights.

Once we got him home he was pretty good, and was asleep by 21:30.

Once Mrs G and I myself went to bed the house was quiet and at some point in the evening Santa arrived.

Hurrah!!

A big congratulations and three cheers for BJ - who has submitted her Thesis and is now free to take some time off and enjoy life :-)

Well done BJ.

There was a recent artistic event in San Francisco where a public, metred car space was 'rented' by a group of artists for 2 hours and converted into open green space for the public to use. They called the event PARK(ing). Have a look - it prompts some thought (as do a lot of other projects these guys get involved in).

Torch

When we took LGR up to bed last night he was quite adamant he didn't want to go to sleep. Mrs G came up with the great idea of giving him a torch and a book. LGR liked this and, as best as we can tell, flicked through some books by the light of the torch, got tired and then went to sleep.

He even remembered to turn off the torch.

---

We went out for dinner on Monday night. To McDonalds. With one of LGR's mates and his family. It was a curiously good dinner. I am a huge fan of the Tandoori Chicken rolls they do and the kids loved playing on the toys. We even got to swap some Christmas presents.

Best of all - the kids were buggered after the game and went to bed pretty easy.

The Wiggles

The Jones clan headed in to the Sydney Entertainment Centre yesterday to see The Wiggles. It was great. We went along with some of LGR's mates (and their respective families) and all the kids had a great time.

The best part of the day for me was watching LGR and his little buddies sitting on consecutive chairs in the Ent Cent waiting patiently, and then getting very excited when the lights started to dim and then being awestruck when the show began. They all danced and sang and clapped and smiled - but only for about 15 minutes. The show got a little bit flat and they got a bit tired - but every now and then a song one of them particularly liked would come on and they'd jump up and start all over again.

I had the privilege of sitting on the aisle and had Murray wiggle and Santa Claus go straight past me. The kids didn't move - they were stunned to see a Wiggle so close.

Even Hayzey enjoyed the show - for most of she sat on my lap perfectly still with her hands clasped together watching it all very intently. When the mood her took her she would clap or wave her hands. About halfway through she decided to go to sleep - but this only lasted for 20 minutes or so :-)

Christmas Lights

This evening we all packed up our picnic gear and headed to Penshurst to revisit the 'old days' of our lives - pre kids. This would be achieved by visiting one of our old food places, grabbing some takeaway and eating in a park and then walking down some streets that have traditionally had excellent outdoor Christmas light displays.

The dinner itself was reasonable - not as good as we remember but not awful either. The park was very nice and the kids had a great time. We probably played for about 2 hours before deciding it was dark enough to wander on over to the streets with the lights.

LGR was quite excited and enjoyed the lights. There were many questions and excited noises. Mrs G and I remember the street being brighter, louder and much more crowded - but the lack of crowds didn't worry us.

Towards the end of the walk it looked as though it was going to pour so I ran back to get the car. We jointly decided to head over to Lugarno - rumour had it there was a pretty good light display.

In the end we found it - and so had the rest of Sydney (seemingly). In essence it was a single street which was mostly nothing out of the ordinary, but with two houses that were very very bright. It took close to 30 minutes of queueing in the car to get to the street, and then about 5 minutes to get down it.

I wouldn't queue to do it again but am glad to have seen it just the same.

----

I got my first drive and cycle on the M7 today. The road itself is quite impressive and certainly an impressive construction effort. Having said that I would be very surprised if I use it all that often - $6 to get from my place to the M4 seems a touch steep and if I used it for work the daily trip cost would be $20 - $12 for the M7 and then other $8 for the M2. All for the sake of saving anywhere between 0 and 15 minutes (on average).

The cycle track is a different kettle of fish - 40km of interrupted roadway which joins up with a myriad of other bike tracks to form an integral part of the often referenced BikePlan 2010

I like the bike track :-)

Big Steps

You will all be pleased to hear that Hayzey is now more or less walking everywhere. She still crawls from time to time but for the most part is walking just about all the time.

And she is very impressed with her newfound ability :-)

Here is some Swedish money - apparently they are redesigning the notes to make them more modern. I'm particularly with the foetus, the skull and what is reported to be the AIDS nanostructure on the 200 note.

Very odd. Nice colours however.

Another Family Birthday

Today our birthday wishes go out to my Dad aka Pampar.

Hope you have a good day.

Pampar might also be interested to know that LGR believes there won't be any presents for Pampar from Santa this year - because Pampar has been naughty.

The crime? Pampar didn't help us put up the Christmas tree :-)

Parties

The kids had their kindy Christmas party yesterday. LGR loved it, and I'm told Hayzey did also but she won't confirm this for me :-)

The party sounded like it was a much better production than last year - Santa turned up (as expected) and they also had a mobile petting zoo. The kids received some beautiful looking books as gifts from Santa and the Mums and Dads took ownership of the artworks produced by the kiddies during the year.

LGR patted the animals!! He even said he enjoyed it. Anyone who has ever seen LGR near an animal of any sort knows how big this achievement is. It makes the prospect of pets in the Jones household much more likely.

The second party of the day was for Mrs G's birthday - and this was a very low key affair. We presented her with some gifts, ordered dinner and had some cake. Both kids were in a beautiful mood and a generally good evening was had. Lochie was dead keen to give out the gifts. He wasn't overly concerned about Mrs G opening them so long as they were given out.

---

Hayzey seems to have had a development spurt of some sort in the last two weeks. She is now choosing to stand and walk more often than not and has become very vocal. I'm pretty sure she understands the words hello and eyes. She knows that a phone is held next to a persons ear and you talk into it ....

Hayzey also understands the phrase 'Crazy Girl' - if you say it to her she will start manically shaking her head from side to side and, if sitting in the high chair, kick her feet wildly. It's very cute.

I stumbled across this recently. I particularly enjoyed the warnings - both the general warning near the top of the page and the more specific warning for the super magnets about halfway down the page.

Vietnamese Travel Photo

A friend recently travelled through Vietname and managed to find this establishment.

I'm sure we all agree that this is a very unfortunate alignment of businesses.

An Excellent Weekend

I mentioned earlier today that I had a good weekend. It's true - I did.

As always the weekend started very early on Saturday morning; beginning with swimming lesson for LJ. We were at the pool by 07:15 and I had a bit of time for a swim before heading off to work. I did 3-4 hours of overtime and then headed back home.

My weekend was about to get excellent.

I had a few aims for Saturday afternoon - the primary one being to build the kids a swing set. I set about this task with much gusto and had a guarantee from LJ that he would be very helpful and listen to whatever I had to say. Predictably he got bored very quickly and buggered off after about 15 minutes.

It was hot - 30+ degrees and I decided to 'man it up' and throw off the shirt. Felt great at the time but I would rediscover later how bad sunburnt ears feel.

Suffice to say I did manage to build the swingset. Some help was required from Mrs G for things like holding posts in place (and I was very grateful for this) but for the most part it was 3.5 hours of my finest work.

After my construction feat was a quick shower and then a BBQ. I fried up some kangaroo steaks, Italian chilli sausages and ordinary bangers for the 'lil ones. Good thing I cooked the plain old sausages because the chilli sausages were very chilli. The kangaroo was outstanding - I ended up cutting it into very fine slices and eating on a bread roll with a delicious little beetroot relish. A very fine BBQ.

And that was pretty much Saturday - a day of domestic achievements :-)

Sunday was cool. We were having a semi-Christmas lunch with some of Mrs G's family and spent the morning bothering around the house getting ready. Unc G came down and prepared up some scrummy little treats (which we all sampled) and, in between times, entertained the kiddies.

Our guests arrived in due course and food was had. I think the highlight was that neither myself nor Mrs G had to do any cooking, and what cooking was done was done by someone who is pretty damned good at it. Made the day very easy and very cool.

Our guests had some kiddies (9 and 4 years old). LGR played with the 4 year old (after the initial shyness was worked through) and the 9 year old loved Hayzey. This left the adults to be adults; and I really enjoyed this.

----

So that's my weekend. It doesn't sound like much on paper but in the real world it was fantastic.

A Very Expensive Mistake

I've just read this on the Internet:

The Typo That Cost A Quarter Of A Billion Dollars (At Least)

Earlier this year, we had a story about a Taiwanese stock trader who made a typo on on a new trading platform her company was using -- costing the firm $251 million. We were surprised that any kind of equities trading software wouldn't have controls to catch such trades, but apparently not. Now we have yet another example. Head up to Japan and you find a case where a trader who might not have had enough caffeine swapped the number of shares he was trying to sell with the price, so that instead of selling one share for 610,000 yen ($5,065), he tried to sell 610,000 shares (40 times the outstanding shares) for (yup) one yen. The system was smart enough not to let the sale go through for one yen, but it did sell many shares at a steep, steep discount. The company whose equity was at stake was having their IPO, so they couldn't have been particularly thrilled. The investment bank, Mizuho Securities, has been scrambling to buy back all the shares they sold -- at a huge premium. So far, the estimates are that the bank has lost $224 million for this little typo. So, with two examples in just a few months showing how little trading typos lead to quarter of a billion dollar losses, don't you think someone might look into making the software that traders use a bit... uh... smarter?

----

That's gotta hurt!!!

Had a huge weekend - will sit down later tonight and do a full update.

A compliment

The good family Jones was sitting around the dinner table last evening discussing the events of the coming day (ie today) and it was mentioned to LGR that he would be going for a drive with Mummy to have lunch with someone special.

The response was an excited "Is it Daddy?"

That is a large compliment indeed. And it is also true that I am the special person ...

Found this groovy little alarm clock earlier today. I have no problems waking up when there's any sort of noise but I know of some people who may need something like this:

Steps

About a 10 days back Hayzey took her first step. Actually - she took two. I saw it happen but CJ didn't so we decided it didn't really happen :-)

Then last Wednesday Hayzey took another two steps - but this time I didn't see it but CJ and LGR did. So this event didnt' really happen either.

On Saturday Hayzey whipped out three steps at her birthday party. She did this 3 times in a row in front of a room full of people. This time it really did happen.

I got home from work yesterday and was told Hayzey was up to 5 steps. By the time we put her to bed last night it was 7.

The other thing she has started is standing (unsupported) and bobbing up and down while she claps - almost like she is dancing. There's even the occasional moment where she puts in a nice little twist while she is standing up.

News from the Frontline

I feel like there has been plenty going on lately; but as I sit here and type I can't really remember what has happened.

The freshest interesting news is that Hayzey has finally developed the capacity to give herself a bottle. This is not to say that she feeds herself; just that if she is in the mind she can take a bottle (or training cup) and give herself a drink. She's very happy with herself when she does this :-)

I watched the World Cup qualification game the other night (Wednesday??). I've never really understood the appeal of soccer (err .... football) but this game was a ripper. I watched the whole thing and and when the lady finally sang I was shaking. Fantastic!! I'm very firmly on the bandwagon now.

The only downside was that I'd been up since 03:00 due to some work commitments. As it was Hayzey kept us up until about midnight; and then she wake again at 04:00. The following night was worse however - I foolishly read until 22:00 and then Hayzey had us up more or less continuously from 00:30 thru to 04:30. At this stage I brought here downstairs and she suddenly decided to sleep ....

LGR is feeling very arty of late - plenty of pasting, drawing, cutting, painting and general creativity. He painted a picture for his mate Corky; but Corky didn't like it and told LGR this. It broke my heart :-(

LGR also loves the idea of Christmas; but doesn't want to go near Santa. He likes decorations, trees, stories, carols, presents (particularly presents) but doesn't want to talk to Santa. He's still a shy little fellow.

Mrs G is sailing along nicely - manically doing cross stitches in front of the TV and enhoying work immensely. She even took the time out yesterday for a 2 hour haircut!!

I'm starting to feel a little bit comfortable in my new job - but not completely. There's a crapload I have to learn and understand but the people there are good, the culture is positive and the tech basis of the company appears to be fundamentally sound. The decision to move was a good one and, in spite of the offers of an open door if I should decide to come back, it appears unlikely that my previous employer will be missed.

Hayzey in the 'Big Bed'

The End of an Era

It's all over. I've finished up with my job at the outsourcing company (I can't recall if I've ever named them on this site; but don't intend to start doing so now) and am now on a 2 day 'mini holiday' before kicking off my new job.

This is the first time I've ever left a job and not been sad. I will miss a lot of the guys I worked with, but the company itself was (is) a terrible company to work for. I honestly don't know why I stayed there as long as I did ...

Well, actually I do. I was getting some things out of it that worked for me. But through the gradual erosion of entitlements and an increase in skills and knowledge the grind became too much and a new environment was needed.

The most overwhelming thing I learnt during my time at this company is just how important senior management are too setting a culture at the company. The decisions they make really do permeate through the company. I've also learnt the importance of communication and consistency.

Every manager I ever spoke to honestly seemed to care about the people in the company, but senior management (who were quite isolated) do what they have to do and try to make the company run more effectively. Unfortunately a lot of the decisions made impacted very badly on those of us further down the food chain ....

To the guys who are still there - keep fighting the good fighting and I hope it works out for each you both collectively and individually.

Hayzey's New Tricks

Hayzey has two new tricks.

She has started saying Da Da.

She can climb into her little cane seat by herself.

On top of this she has started spontaenously standing up by herself (unsupported) and we think the first steps aren't too far away.

Central Coast

The good clan Jones made our way up to the Central Coast over the weekend and had a few nights in a little cabin by the beach. Nice to get out of Sydney and wake up to the sounds of waves on the beach and birds on the trees.

We went up to the coast on Saturday straight after swimming lessons. First stop was Avoca Beach. Hayzey was fascinated by the whole thing - pointing at the water and making all sorts of excited sounds. LGR was cautious - wouldn't go near the water but was quite happy to play in the sand.

From here we drove to Terrigal for lunch. Five years ago I thought Terrigal was a great place - but now I think it's overpriced and wanky. We had some lunch on the beach and then walked up some sort of hill (backwards while watching cricket). LGR managed to walk up the whole thing, much to my surprise. He loved coming back down - I think he ran the whole way in a zigzag patter.

From Terrigal it was off to our accommodation at Bateau Bay. We checked in and very shortly discovered that we'd been charged for a certain type of cabin but had received something of a lesser standard. Mrs G had a quick chat with reception and we were off to our new cabin - which was much more in line with what we had in mind.

We didn't do much for the rest of the day - we bought some supplies for breakfasts and dinners and went for a swim in the pool. And it was a very nice pool - saltwater and around 26-28 degrees. Gorgeous. LGR loved it, and even managed to make a friend. We ran into LGR's friend several times over the next two days.

Hayzey, as it turns out, loves water even more than LGR. She was grinning from ear to ear and making some very excited noises. Her little legs would kick endlessly and whenever she got a chance she would splash water onto her face or even dunk her face into the water. I put her under the water a few times and this didn't phase her at all.

The kiddies went to sleep very easily, but woke up at about 05:00 on Sunday morning. I went for a run (thru the bush on the cliff tops) and by 07:30 we were breakfast'd and in the pool (again). After a while Mrs G and Hayzey went back to the cabin and LGR and I had a crack at the beach. He didn't like it; so we went back to the pool and met up with his friend again.

By 10:00 we were on our way up to The Entrance. I like The Entrance. It's much more open and accesssible. We meandered around the town square part of town for a while looking at stuff and playing games and had a little picnic lunch while listening to some live music.

After lunch it was a drive to let the kids have some sleep (they were both knackered) and then back to the cabin for a quick change and into the pool again. Once more LGR's little mate arrived and they played together for about 90 minutes. LGR had the foresight to take two noodles to the pool and was thrilled that his newfound mate enjoyed playing.

After the pool we went back to the cabin and had showers. While Mrs G and Hayzey played inside LGR and I jumped in the (outdoor) spa that came with the cabin and sang songs. It was very sweet, and probably the highlight of the trip for me. We then all went for a walk on the beach. LGR was still scared of the waves but we managed to coax him out onto some rocks in the water (it was low tide) and we all had a nice (but careful) game clambering about on the rocks.

Once again the kids were in bed pretty easy and Mrs G took advantage of this to jump in the spa. It was very nice - just under 40 degrees, sheltered from wind but with views of surrounding bush and a perfectly clear night sky. Very nice, very relaxing.

Monday was our last day. The morning thing was again to get up very early, have some breakfast and go for a swim. It was a bit chilly, but the pool was still warm. As long as you stayed in the water :-) LGR's little mate wasn't in the pool this time and the poor little chap was hearbroken. He wanted to 'play with my little friend' and was very upset that he wouldn't get to say goodbye :-(

We checked out at 10:00 and went home via Ourimbah (Mrs G wanted to see some stuff there). Both kids were awake all the way along the freeway and chattered the whole time.

All in all it was a nice little break - the type of thing we'll have to try to do more often.

Miscellaneous

Hiya Everybody

I've been very, very slack again. There's been a few things going on and I've neglected to share the news with everyone. Naught, naughty me.

I'll start with the party of 3's - I turned 30 and LGR turned 3. To answer everyone's questions I feel great about being 30 and I don't believe I'm over the hill. Life is not any different and I don't have any more grey hairs.

The day was good. Mrs Gazzarus and myself were up from about 02:00 in the morning - because Hayzey thought this was a good idea. At the least it made my day longer. Mrs G and myself alos both had developing headcolds and to top it off my wisdom teeth were moving again.

But never mind - party's to have. We ordered a jumping castle for LGR and his mates. When it was being blown up LGR didn't want to know about it, and didn't go near it for about an hour. Then other kiddies started to arrive and we couldn't keep them off it.

I seemed to spend most of the first hour chatting, then most of the second hour cooking up a BBQ. I got a bunch of meat from a pretty good butcher; but the chicken sausages (which are usually pretty good) were crap. Sorry about that folks. Suffice to say they have been scratched from the shopping list.

Any way - as with most party's it all happened in a blur. I think I got to chat to everyone. There were presents everywhere, kids everywhere, noise everywhere.

LGR cried when the jumping castle was taken away.

----
----

What else? I formally accepted the new job offer. This means I will now be working 5 days a week in more or less standard business hours. No more shift work - which is good.

----
----

Gifts. I got heaps of gifts.

In order that I received them:

My Dad gave me a Flash player. To quote LGR - "It's tops". Unfortunately there was a little software bug which meant the songs downloaded to the player were truncated - the last 10s dropped off. One firmware upgrade later and that problem is solved. I have mobile music :-)

My roasting tray from Mrs G. This probably doesn't seem like a big deal to most people but I was thrilled. I've never had a fair dinkum heavy duty roasting tray with a roasting rack. It's been used to make a roast chook with potatoes cooked in the drippings. It was very good. The tray only just fits in the oven - if it was 2mm wider it wouldn't get in at all. Would've needed to get a bigger oven (or a new kitchen, or house) to use my tray :-)

Grandma (aka Mrs G's Mum) gave me breadmaker. It is so nice to effortlessly cook fresh bread and it smells amazing. All I have to do now is figure out where to get strong flour and different flour mixes. And become creative.

My Mum gave me the most personal gift - and the one with the most thought and meaning. It was a pictorial diary of my life. From when I was a newby kid up until pretty much now. I had an inkling it was coming (hard to keep a project of this magnitude quiet) but still found myself a little teary when receiving it.

----
----

We're going for a trip away soon. Via the Internet we've managed to score ourselves an absolute beachfront cabin (all that is between us and the water is sand - apparently) which has an indoor spa, outdoor jacuzzi (sp?) and who knows what else. Best of all it's not in Sydney. Very keen, very looking forward to it.

----
----

The kids. How can I forget the kids? They're great. Both are getting along like a house on fire. Hayzey is cruising everywhere, babbling incessantly and pointing at everything. She is eating just about everything she sees and not sleeping beyond daylight. She smiles and giggles alot and likes a bit adventure in her life. She's not scared of anything yet.

Strangely enough Hayzey has learnt how to headbutt things. Mrs G and myself saw herself sitting on the backdoors (leading to the dock) a few days back rocking back and forth and tapping her head on the glass door. This wasn't enough however. She turned around, got an all fours and started to rock her body back and forth - and in the process whacking her head into the door. She was laughing while doing it!!

LGR is learning something every day and still files away everything he sees and hears. Sometimes he doesn't understand - but then a few days later he'll make a comment and you realise that he's remembered. He is currently wearing a spiked haircuit - courtesy of an overly enthusiastic hairdresses. It looks very cool when done up properly.

The best part of the new haircut is that it prompted to say he looked like me. I don't hear this too often, and it made me happy.

A new job

Hi All

It's finally happened. I've gone out and found myself a new job.

My last day with my 'beloved' present company is 2nd November. The new gig kicks off on the 7th.

What will I be doing? I'm not entirely sure; but in a nutshell it boils down to IP comms for a pretty big company's corporate and broadcast systems. There are many interesting challenges to be had and many things to be learnt.

Hayzey's First Day

Today was Hayzey's first day of kindergarten. Mrs Gazzarus is back to work next week.

Apparently the dropoff went pretty well - Mrs G stayed at kindy for a few hours with Hayzey and LGR and saw off the morning sleep and a bit of a feed. When Mrs G left Hayzey and LGR were quite happily playing with each other.

During the day Hayzey had another sleep, a bit of a feed, played in the sandpit and pressed some buttons on some toys.

Mrs G and I arrived at kindy together to pick the kids up. LGR was his normal self but Hayzey seemed very quiet - until we got in the car. Suddenly she picked up, started yelling with delight and letting us know she was allright :-)

It's quite a sad day really - both our kids are in day care now. That's the price you pay for living in Sydney :-(

Standing

Hayzey is now standing, unsupported, for periods of up to 10 seconds. The only catch is that we have to put her in that position. Once she is there she's pretty stable. Sometimes she falls over immediately; other times she gradually lowers herself to the ground and other times she will stand there for the full 10s and then collapse on herself.

Night Shift ....

Hi Folks

Here I am at 04:30am - 10.5 hours into my shift and only 1.5 hours to go. Starting to get a bit weary.

This week I have had one very nice conversation with LGR, and Mrs G and I had one very interesting conversation with him.

The nice one first:

We were discussing the weather while I was pushing him on the swing at the park. He asked me why it wasn't raining - he could see clouds and even informed me that the TV Lady said it would rain. I told him that the lady on TV made a mistake. This is still a bit of unknown concept (mistake) and I had to assure LGR that making a mistake is different to being naughty; and that everyone makes mistakes.

His reply? "Not Mummy". When asked if Daddy makes mistakes I was met with a giggle and the single word reply of "Yes"

Now the interesting conversation.

Mrs G, myself and LGR were discussing the upcoming birthday parties over dinner when he suddenly piped up with "The funny girls will come to the party!". We thought this was cute; until he followed it up with "We will give them beer!"

I have no idea where this came from or exactly what he meant - but I'm sure everyone has their own interpretation. Those who've eaten with LGR will understand his interpretation of beer ....

Days off work

I just had 4 days off work :-)

It was busy. On day 1 we travelled down to our favourite nursery and bought some plants for the backyard - two wattle trees, a grevillea type thing, an unidentified freeby that will need some loving, a couple of ground covers and some little yellow shrubs.

Friday was the planting day. LGR was very excited and a very enthusiastic helper. His areas of expertise appear to be digging holes, spreading manure ('smelly dirt') and watering. He loves it all really. Hayzey is not so involved and is content to crawl around on the grass (and eat it).

I also bit a mini-deck to cover the easement in the backyard. I'm quite proud of it.

Saturday was a big drive out to Lithgow for a birthday party. The day started at 05:30 and we ended up getting home at about 21:00. In the middle we had swimming lessons, a breakfast excursion, the trip to Lithgow and some party time and then a stopover in Katoomba on the way back for some kids playtime, baths and dinner. A very long day and both kiddies were pretty well behaved.

Sunday was another birthday party - a Wiggles party this time. I've never seen so many kids at a party in my life. I would guess there were about twice as many kids as adults. Very noisy, very hectic.

So that was my four days off. Now I'm back at work and relishing the chance to sit back and do nothing much for a while :-)

The Little Boy is a Big Brother

Hi Folks

Trust all is well. It's been an interesting week for some out there and I trust it will all turn out well in the end :-)

I wanted to let you know about LGR. I believe he is turning out to be the finest big brother an 8 month old girl could ever ask for.

In my wildest dreams I never expected that I kiddie 2 months short of 3 years old could display so much patience, love and loyalty to a younger sibling. LGR is amazing.

Examples .....

A few weeks back LGR was asleep on the floor after 'pool party' and Hayzey was crawling around the place getting into mischief. Within a short period of time she had managed to discover the sleeping boy and hoisted herself onto his head and latched onto his hair with both hands. The reaction? A dismayed LGR cried and asked for help; but didn't respond by pushing Hayzey away or trying to hurt her. That's patience and understanding for you.

Another example:

LGR was playing with his (my) MegaBlocks on the top of an upturned crate. Hayzey became interested and stood herself up to next to LGR. Their versions of the game differed however - LGR was building but Hayzey just wanted to throw. Once again LGR asked us help him move Hayzey rather than deciding to just push her over or whack her with a block.

Third example:

For as long as I can remember LGR has always reacted to suggestions of 'Should we leave Hayzey behind?' with a very emphatic 'No'. If Mrs G or myself say we are all going out LGR is very deliberate in checking that Hayzey is coming with us.

Final example:

Hayzey is walking (assisted) just about all the time. LGR loves grabbing her hands and helping her walk around the house. It doesn't always work but the fact that he wants to help her impresses me mightily.

---

These are just a few examples. This type of thing happens every day. LGR is hardly ever aggressive or dismissive of Hayzey. His capacity to be patient, understanding and affectionate towards her is seemingly boundless. In her own special Hayzey understands this and reciprocates with giggles, smiles and raspberries. I'm even convinced they have conversations.

Mrs G and I have been blessed with the finest kiddies ever to grace the earth.

Talking

Hayzey has begun to make speech like sounds.

I'm pretty sure I heard her say 'Dada' a few days; and Mrs G and I are both very certain she crawls saying "Ma ma ma ma". Especially when she is crying.

Degrees of Kidness

I promised a new post last night; but I'm 12 hours late. Sorry ....

A couple of stories to tell about LGR.

One
---

A few days back LGR was painting on the back deck. An excited burble of 2 year old speak caught the attention of Mrs G. LGR was proudly proclaiming "I made my letter!".

It turns out he had painted an L - albeit backwards. He was so excited he then proceeded to turn it into a J :-)

Two
---

A few evenings back I came home from work dead tired. I went upstairs to put on my pyjamas and LGR decided to tag along. After I was PJ'd up I lay on my bed and told LGR I was going to sleep. He didn't like this and started gently rubbing my cheeks and saying, very softly, "Don't sleep Daddy". Then he began to rub a little more roughly. I asked what he was doing. The reply - "Making your face smooth. I shave you Daddy". Nice work little buddy.

Three
-----

This one happened this morning and is conversation based. It went something like:

LGR - "Where am I going today"

Daddy - "You're going to kindy"

LGR - "Where are you (ie Daddy) going today?"

Daddy - "I'm going to work"

LGR - "Why?"

Daddy - "It's my turn. I have to go to work so someone else can go home"

LGR - "It's not your turn. It's someone elses turn"

I wish :-)

Friends.
LGR ready for a big day
Hayzey - very pleased with her efforts.

Crawling, Standing, Falling

Hayzey is crawling everywhere. If she has half an opportunity she will stand up. If she grabs on to something that moves she moves with it and won't let go.

Hayzey can't get herself into a sitting position once she is standing up :-)

We also think Hayzey might have said 'Da-da' yesterday; but maybe we just imagined it.

LGR is still Wiggles fixated. I read a story about Wiggle World today; and have realised that there is no way we are not going to Dreamworld when we get up to Queensland for our long awaited trip.

It turns out the Wiggles have been performing for as long as Mrs G and I have been a 'couple' - a nice bit of symmetry.

What Have We Been Up To?

It's been almost two weeks since my last update. I've meant to put something; but have been sidetracked by a few things.

I'll start with the kiddies .....

Hayzey is beginning to crawl. Mrs G and myself have seen her take up to 5 'crawls' at a time; but she still prefers the belly. The knee crawl is very awkward and very cute to watch. Sometimes we become convinced she is going to crawl on her hands and feet - but she always seem to lose balance.

Hayzey has also discovered our steps - so the step guard is back on and in duty. So far she's only gotten to the 2nd step, but she's also had some very near misses.

The other interesting thing Hayz is doing is eating toast. She loves it. We give her half a piece of wholemeal at brekky each day and she tears into it. There are no teeth yet so she gums it to death.

LGR is back on the Wiggles wagon bigtime. He loves music - and has started to improvise by interspersing songs and mixing in his own lyrics. There must be at least 50 songs that he knows and he recognises so many more. Earlier today we caught him walking around saying 'Six months in a leaky boat' (Split Enz I think?) and last night he told me how much he likes 'Eagle Rock'. Cool kid :-)

The other new trick he is doing and just an embellishment on an old one - talking our ears off. There's a bit less 'Why?' going on but there's a lot more general question asking and plenty of telling Mummy and Daddy (and anyone who will listen) what's going on and why it's happening.

There's not much new in the life of Mrs G and myself. Mrs G is still loving maternity leave and I'm still jealous that she has it. I've done a bit of study and have managed to finally pass an Industry certification exam. I'm trying to run, but am having all sorts of problems with my right shin. Maybe it's time to take up swimming or cycling? Can you imagine me swimming for recreation? Very boring - although I did manage to do it for 2 consecutive months earlier this year.

But that's enough - there should be some pics up pretty soon.

Ooroo.

LGR and the phone

It's been a while since my last post and I've been getting asked when the next one is coming. Here 'tis.

Why so long? I've been busy. Working, studying, playing with the kids. I've even been able to run a little bit lately.

What's my point? No point.

A few days back Mrs Gazzarus was talking to Mum McK and LGR decided he needed to talk on the phone too - just for a change. I wasn't aware of this but a decision was reached to put LGR on the phone and Mum McK grabbed Corky. It was at this point that LGR had his first phone conversation with a friend.

Nice one :-)

A Weekday Sojourn to Katoomba

Our latest adventure was back to Katoomba - to visit our Mum's.

Once again it was a gorgeous day - no wind, no rain, bright sun. Is this really winter?

First stop was Ma's house. Both kiddies were well and truly refreshed courtesy of good sleeps in the car and both were raring to go when we arrived. Upon entering the house it became apparent that the new furniture had indeed arrived and was looking fine in it's new place of residence. After testing out the table, chairs and lounge it was outside for some 'digs' and a bit of a chat over the back fence with a chap I used to go to school with (and who, coincidentally, happens to work about 10 minutes from where I live).

It was a nice visit - Mrs Gazzarus and Grandma had a nice time looking over old pictures, LGR and Hayzey did their things and I got to watch plenty of cooking shows courtesy of the Lifestyle Food channel.

The only down side was LGR having a pretty good chuck after lunch. We had fish pie (which I thought was gorgeous) but in hindsight this is unlikely to be a cause. After the chuck he had a snooze and he wake up after Uncle G arrived home. LGR was plenty pleased to see Uncle G.

Next stop was Nanna's place - also in Katoomba. Within 5 minutes of arriving multiple baskets of toys were being sourced and a huge mess was created. In an interesting twist LGR asked Nanna to see photo's of Daddy when he was little. These failed to come out, but I'm sure he'll ask again :-)

Not much happened at Nanna's - we sat around chatting about all sorts of things and took it in turns to play with the kids. Hayzey brought out a new trick - a double leg climb over. She had managed a single over my leg on Sunday but this was twice as good!!

Dinner was, as requested, a very quicky and easy affair of the most impressive wafer thin beef steaks with bread and salad - quite possibly the best steak sambo's I've ever had.

LGR had another enormous chuck after dinner - this time all over me (ie the right shoulder, front and back of my shirt). The evening was called shortly after. We almost made it home - but LGR had another chuck about 20 minutes from home.

In spite of this we had another good day - it's always nice to get back up the mountains. Even if we did live their once upon a time ....

Chipping Norton Lakes

It's a nice day :-)

We woke up this morning with not a single plan. Up until about 3pm yesterday we were going to visit the Zoocows of upper Wollongong to congratulate them on the birth of their second kiddy - but this has turned out to be a bit of an issue and the trip won't be made. Regardless - congrats to the Zoocow family!!

After some 'deliberation' we decided a trip to somewhere with some water to look at and a bike track to ride on was in order. Chipping Norton Lakes is the nearest place with both of these things so off we went.

It was a magnificent day - about 18 degrees, no wind, bright sun. We turned up and the area we frequent was not overly busy. There were some new toys installed, and the old wooden toys had been removed. And the 'beach' was covered in some sort of weird aquatic plant. But apart from this it was much as we remember.

What did we do there? LGR and I went for bike rides, LGR went for a few walks with Mummy, Hayzey crawled around the place trying to eat leaves, cheesy rice biscuits and just about everything else, we dug in the sand, played on the 'boat', went on the slide and swings, had a fast food lunch, lay around snoozing, played soccer, wrestled, giggled and had a good time.

It was a truly nice day.

News Flash - Hayzey Passes Another Milestone

I have a report from a very good source that Hayzey today moved herself from a laying position to a sitting position.

My details are a little vague but from what I can understand this was done on the lounge-room and without assistance.

My beautiful little girl is growing up far too quickly.

Canberra - The Final Day

We got another sleep in today - LGR and myself until 06:45 and CJ and Hayzey until about 07:15. Nice - until you remember that LGR is still restless and CJ woke up three times during the night.

Today was our last day in Canberra - and Pampar managed to roster himself a day off work. We had a breakfast which seemed to last for hours and in the midst of all this CJ and I reclaimed all the detrius we had spread over the house during our stay. We think. The key to my Corolla snapped out of it's plastic housing somewhere between home greater Canberra so that may still be in the house. Maybe....

LGR started to get restless at about 10:45 so we all rugged up and went out for a walk. We visited a pond and failed to find a single duck (but there were some very disinterested carp) before having a little meander around the neighbourhood.

We ended up leaving Pampar's at about 11:45 and drove relentlessly until we got to Bowral for some lunch. We'd promised LGR a park; but had to settle for McDonalds and the play area they have. He also got an ice-cream so he wasn't too upset.

The trip from Bowral back home was interesting - there was plenty of rain and some of it was very heavy. (It's been raing for the past couple of days - it even rained in Goulbourn when we were there). Hayzey was cranky, LGR was singing and it was raing - a nice trip :-)

Suffice to say we got back home safe and sound and now have to prepare for life back in the real world.

Canberra - The Third Day

Another day sharing a bed with LGR - and I'm still tired. But I got some very nice hugs at about 04:00 when Pampar's dog decided it was time to start barking at some animal in the paddocks behind their house. LGR didn't say anything but I think he was a bit scared.

At breakfast he took a great deal of delight in telling Pampar and AJ that they had a 'naughty dog'. In spite of this LGR let the dog in the house and was quite content while she was in the house - so long as the dog kept well away from him.

After brekky (at Pampar's shop again) we decided to head over to Red Hill Lookout. This trivial task become a little difficult due to a a random turn in Civic which threw out my navigator. By the time we recovered the kids were asleep again and the views (which looked magnificent) were enjoyed from our car. From here it was a drive through Duffy and Rivett to look at the site of the new proposed recreation park and then down to South Tuggeranong Lake for a game and some food.

What did we do there? Played on some swings, played soccer, fed ducks, climbed, chased, played on see-saws - all the good stuff. It got cold at about 11:30 so we shot through soon after and ended up spending close to an hour finding a hot dog for LGR's lunch.

After lunch it was time for yet another sleep for the kids and another meandering drive for the adults. We arrived back at Pampar's house at about 15:00 and once again the kiddies found some kid-style energy and did their thing.

Boo-boo and her parents arrived for dinner at about 17:45 and within the hour Pampar and myself were dispatched for pizza. In that time it became apparent that LGR thought Boo-boo was a good friend (Boo-boo is approx 6 months younger) so all adults were able to relax just a little bit.
LGR thinks the soccer at Cockington Green is tops.

Canberra - The Second Day

Over night I had the pleasure of sleeping with LGR in a double bed - not that you would know he slept or that it was a double bed. He is very restless and very possessive of bed space. Suffice to say I didn't get a lot of sleep. Luckily CJ did - for the first time in a long time Hayzey slept through.

Brekky was a quick trip in to Civic for some food at my Dad's shop - not sure if he wants any PR on this site; but if he does the link will be here.

After breakfast we were in the car again and the kids went to sleep again. So we drover around more of Canberra again. I like Canberra's roads - double lane, smooth, very little traffic and bugger all traffic lights. You can seemingly get from any where to any where in almost no time.

Once the kiddies woke our destination was Cockington Green. I was a bit of a sceptic at first but soon discovered the miniatures are quite cute. LGR loved it - he wanted to touch everything and was fascinated by it all. At the end we went for a steam train ride which LGR loved and Hayzey used to make a new fried (CJ sat next to a young girl - about 8 - and she was holding Hayzey's hands before we started moving).

Lunch was had and then we were off for another drive - because the kids were asleep again. We ended up at Yerrabi Pond and the kids had a play before we set off back to Pampar's place. Much to our surprise Pampar and AJ came home early and caught us with a very dirty house. Whoops :-)

The rest of the day was spent letting the kids destroy the house. CJ and I cooked a very easy dinner and we all had to fight LGR for the right to watch some adult TV (ie the news).

A Few Days in Canberra - The Trip There

First point - this is all being done in hindsight so some of the timelines may be a bit vague; but there's a good chance no-one really cares about this small issue.

Second point - I'm very tired so any typos, grammatical errors etc are entirely my own fault and I'm going to blame fatigue.

----

Somehow we all managed a sleep in on day one. The kiddies woke at about 06:45 and when I asked LGR where we were off to he answered with "Pampar's house".

A quick shower and some breakfast and we were on our way. Within 10km of home there was a crash on the Hume Highway - a car had rolled and was on it's roof leaking petrol. A quick detour and we're on our way again.

The first stop was Goulbourn - to give Hayzey some food and to let LGR see the Big Merino. It's fair to say he was underwhelmed; but CJ and I were very impressed with the approx 1 degree celcius temperature and apparent sleet.

After a walk inside the sheep and an extended stopover at McDonalds (hot chocolate for the adults and chippies for LGR) we were back on the road again. Hayzey had a nice scream along Lake George - which is exactly the same place LGR had a tantrum of his first trip to Canberra. Another sibling similarity.

We pulled into Canberra at midday. Lunch was a very quick bit to eat at Belconnen and the kids passed out in the car so we drove around for a bit.

We pulled into Pampar's house at approx 14:00 and all was set. Pampar was home (as promised) and the kids were ripe for a romp. The rest of the day was spent hanging around being somewhat lazy and letting the kids do their thing.

Hayzey can sit up - and is almost crawling
LGR at the 'bike park'

It's Been A Good Week

It's been a couple of days since I've last posted .... and a few things have happened.

LGR and I went out for our first bike ride yesterday. It took me almost three hours to get the booster seat on the back of my pushbike but it is well and truly worth the effort. He loved it. We were only out for about 45 minutes but he chatter the entire way. We will definitely be going for more rides in the future.

Hayzey has, in the space of 20 days, gone from not moving at all (unless you include rolling) to doing a full army crawl and is now rocking on her hands and knees. Hayz is pleased as punch about this. Every time she gets up and rocks she smiles and drools and looks very happy with herself.

What else? We've had some dinner guests. Aunty BJ came over on Thursday night and confirmed that a visit to her Dad's farm can be organised. So we'll have to do something about that. LGR in particular would enjoy - but if nothing else it would be a nice day out in the country.

We also had the clan McK and the Chefs over last evening - with all their kids. I think there were 7 kids in the house, 6 of whom were 3 years old or less. It was noisy and hard to get conversational flow happening but the kiddies behaved and I think a pleasant enough time was had by all.

I Love a Public Holiday

Today was a public holiday in my part of the world. Magnificent :-)

What did we do I hear you asking? We got up at 06:00 as any family with two kiddies under 3 would do. In various orders we had breakfast, showers and played Spiderman on the bed.

Then it was off to Pimelea Playspace for a bit of fun with the majority of clan McK.

For those who don't know the Pimelea Playspace is a fairly nice and underutilised semi-recreation area in the Western Sydney Regional Park. I like it. There's stuff there for the kids, and if I feel the urge to go for a vigorous bit of biking or cross-country running there's an abundance of that too. It's right next door to where the Mountain Biking was held in the Sydney Olympics.

But today was a day with the kids. LGR traditionally hunts in a pair with his mate Corky - and today was no different. There were boat rides had (it was necessary to put the bikes in the boat so they didn't get wet in the water - water which doesn't exist), walks up big mountains (for little legs), slides, rope climbs, drinks and biccies and more Spiderman games.

Whilst all this was going on Hayzey was rolling about in her own style and paying close attention to McK Jnr. They made eyes at each other, blew some bubbles and then ignored each other as much as possible.

After about 90 minutes it turned cold and the day was cut short for a trip back to the Jones household for some lunch and games. And very pleasant the food and games turned out to be.

The Mountains In June

The Jones clan travelled up to the Blue Mountains today to visit my Mum for a belated birthday lunch.

It was a gorgeous day - somewhere around 15 degrees, bright sunshine and no wind to speak of. Spirits were high and the kiddies were behaving.

We had a nice, simple lunch with two types of birthday cake (Aunt LJ brought a cake last evening but they never got to eat it because of a big night). Pressies were given - Lochie wanted one for himself - and well recieved. Conversation was had and laughs were evident. Very nice.

After lunch we had a nice little photo session with several choice snaps taken. Those who were there know what I mean :-) After this it was off to visit Ma for a bit and then home.

All in all a very pleasant day.

NB - My old place in Katoomba is up for sale. Again. Apparently it has been renovated (cough, cough) and is on the market for $400k ...... Are they kidding? I thought about having a look through it but I've decided I want to remember it the way it was.

Happy Birthday Mum

Hi Mum

My Day With Hayzey

I had the pleasure of spending 6 hours with lil' Hayzey on Monday. CJ had committed to some interviews at Kindy so the babysitting fell to me .....

It wasn't too bad - except that I had just done two nights of On Call straight after two nights of 12 hour night shift. I was tired. But I love my Hayzey and this was a great chance to 'bond'.

CJ left at about 08:30. The first half hour was great - just laying on the floor, playing games, dribbling and drooling. Then I deciced to do some housework. Bad idea. The first task was to hang out the washing. Hayzey cried. I picked her up and she stopped. Then I went back outside and she cried again.

The pattern was set. And this continued for the next 5.5 hours.

To top it all off - this was the longest Hayzey been without Mummy's milk. And she really, really wanted some. The food I could offer was not interesting enough.

I could get her to go to sleep. This was nice. But as the day wore on the crying got more and more persistent and eventually ended up with Hayzey screaming and me ..... sort of whimpering I guess?

But - would I do it again? In a second. Ever since these glorious but somewhat taxing six hours I feel a certain kinship with Hayzey that wasn't there before. And that's what life is about.
